When Assumptions Create Distance in Marriage

Every marriage involves two people who see life differently.

We each have our own experiences, expectations, and ways of communicating. Because of this, it can be easy to assume we know what our spouse is thinking or feeling.

But assumptions can quietly create distance.

When We Assume Instead of Ask

Sometimes we fill in the blanks without realizing it.

We may assume our spouse should know what we need.

We may assume their silence means they are upset.

We may assume they do not care because they responded differently than we expected.

When we assume, we often respond to what we think is happening rather than what is actually happening.

This can lead to frustration, hurt, and unnecessary conflict.

The Importance of Communication

Healthy communication gives couples an opportunity to understand one another instead of making assumptions.

Instead of thinking, “They should know,” we can learn to communicate what we need.

Instead of assuming what our spouse meant, we can ask.

Instead of reacting to what we think they are saying, we can slow down and listen.

These small changes can make a meaningful difference in a marriage.

Choose Curiosity Over Assumption

When something feels unclear, ask questions.

Give your spouse an opportunity to explain what they meant.

Listen before responding.

And remember that not every difference is a disagreement.

Sometimes our spouse simply sees something differently than we do.

Choosing to understand before reacting creates room for connection.

James 1:19 reminds us, “Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry.”

Listening requires humility.

It reminds us that we may not always have the full picture.

Building a Marriage of Understanding

Marriage grows stronger when couples learn to communicate openly and give each other the benefit of the doubt.

We will not always understand our spouse perfectly.

But we can choose to ask instead of assume.

We can listen instead of react.

And we can make understanding more important than being right.

Healthy marriages are built through communication, patience, and a willingness to keep learning one another.

When we take the time to understand instead of assume, we create more room for connection.
