When Purpose Feels Far Away
“I just don’t know what I’m supposed to be doing.”
This sentence is more common than we think. Behind it is the voice of someone who feels lost in the fog of busyness, burnout, or disconnection — someone searching for clarity in a season that feels directionless.
If that’s you, you’re not alone. And you’re not failing. You’re human.
The Myth of Instant Clarity
Some people seem to be born knowing what they’re called to do. But for most of us, purpose is a journey — not a download. It’s revealed over time, shaped through experiences, and clarified through trial, error, and faith.
In 12 Habits for a Sound Mind and Joyful Life, we unpack this idea deeply: that purpose isn’t something we chase, it’s something we walk into. One step at a time.
God doesn’t hide purpose from us as a test. He walks with us as we learn to trust Him, even when we can’t see the full picture.
Start with What’s in Your Hand
Sometimes we overthink purpose because we’re looking for the grand plan instead of noticing the small invitations:
Who has God placed around you right now?
What skills or experiences do you carry that others need?
What injustice makes you angry?
What brokenness makes you want to build something better?
Moses had a staff in his hand. David had a sling. The disciples had nets. God doesn’t waste what’s in your hand — He uses it to shape what’s in your heart.
Obstacles That Cloud Purpose
If you feel stuck, consider what might be blocking your view:
Comparison: You can’t discover your unique purpose while trying to live someone else’s.
Fear of failure: Purpose often requires risk — but obedience matters more than perfection.
Lack of clarity about identity: When you don’t know who you are, it’s hard to know what you’re meant to do.
Healing these areas doesn’t happen overnight. But healing brings clarity. As you grow in emotional and spiritual health, your purpose will become clearer too.
A Purpose Bigger Than You
True purpose isn’t self-centered. It’s God-centered. It doesn’t just serve your success — it serves others and builds the Kingdom.
If you're unsure about your next steps, ask: How can I love well today? Sometimes purpose is simply faithfulness in small things. That’s where impact begins.
You were created on purpose, for a purpose — even if it doesn’t feel obvious yet.
You’re not lost. You’re being led.
