The Importance of Honor in Marriage

Every marriage is built on the daily choices a husband and wife make toward one another.

Some of those choices are obvious, while others happen quietly through everyday interactions. The words we speak, the way we respond during disagreements, and how we treat one another all contribute to the health of a marriage.

One of the most important qualities that strengthens a relationship is honor.

While honor may not be discussed as often as communication or conflict resolution, it creates an environment where love, trust, and respect can grow.

What Honor Looks Like

Honor is more than being polite.

It is choosing to value your spouse as someone created in the image of God.

Honor is demonstrated when we listen before responding, speak with kindness, and treat our spouse with dignity—even when emotions are high.

Scripture reminds us:

"Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves."Romans 12:10

Honor isn't something we extend only when everything is going well. It is a daily decision to place value on the person God has entrusted to us.

Honor During Difficult Seasons

It is often easiest to show honor when we feel appreciated.

The greater challenge comes during moments of disappointment, frustration, or disagreement.

Healthy marriages don't avoid difficult conversations, but they choose to have them without tearing one another down.

Even when opinions differ, spouses can remain respectful, patient, and willing to listen.

Honor helps protect the relationship while working through the problem.

Small Choices That Build Honor

Honor is often expressed through simple, everyday actions.

It may look like thanking your spouse for something they do regularly.

Speaking well of them in front of others.

Keeping your promises.

Making time to listen without distractions.

Offering encouragement instead of criticism.

These habits may seem small, but over time they create an atmosphere of safety, appreciation, and trust.

A Marriage Marked by Honor

Healthy marriages are not built on perfection.

They are built by two imperfect people who continually choose to love, respect, and honor one another.

As you move through this week, ask yourself:

How can I intentionally show honor to my spouse today?

One thoughtful word.

One act of kindness.

One decision to respond with patience.

Small choices made consistently can have a lasting impact on a marriage.

When honor becomes a way of life, relationships become stronger, trust grows deeper, and couples reflect Christ more clearly through the way they love one another.
